Multiwave is building a portable, AI-powered MRI that aims to make preventive whole-body screening affordable for everyday patients. Conventional MRI scanners weigh several tons, need special rooms and cooling, and a preventive whole-body scan typically costs $2,500 or more. Multiwave’s device runs from a standard wall outlet, needs no cooling or shielding, and is small enough to move through doors and elevators into clinics.
Founded in Switzerland in 2015, Multiwave has already sold research scanners to leading hospitals and universities in the U.S. and Europe, including Mount Sinai and Johns Hopkins. It now manufactures in Lowell, Massachusetts. Its portable brain MRI is under FDA review, and longevity clinics have signed letters of intent to launch a portable MRI service.
A preventive whole-body MRI costs $2,500 or more, which puts regular screening out of reach for almost everyone. Multiwave is building a portable MRI that aims to bring the price of that scan down to $399, opening preventive imaging to a much wider market.
